GoCompare offers advice to passengers affected by the Primera collapse

The collapse of Primera has left thousands of passengers stranded and wondering if they’ve lost the money they’ve spent on holidays and flights.

Georgie Frost, consumer advocate at GoCompare, gives advice to those affected:

“The collapse of Danish airline Primera, comes almost a year to the day since the collapse of Monarch airlines sparked Britain's biggest ever peacetime repatriation. Now we have news of another airline going belly up leaving customers stranded and out of pocket, and staff without jobs.

“For those stranded abroad, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is urging those expecting return flights to the UK with the operator to make fresh arrangements home.

“Anyone yet to travel who has booked a Primera flight through a travel agent, the ATOL protection scheme may cover you for a refund. If you booked the flight directly, unfortunately you won’t be covered.

“These customers may be able to claim a refund via their credit card company but also, if they have Scheduled Airline Failure Insurance (SAFI) as part of their travel insurance policy they will be able to claim on that for the cost of the flights and for other holiday expenses up to the maximum claim limit as specified on the policy. Customers with travel insurance should contact their insurer for further guidance.

“While this is another blow to passenger confidence in the travel industry, it’s also a reminder to anyone planning a trip abroad to get appropriate travel cover.

"When GoCompare analysed the Defaqto matrix, out of 1032 annual multi-trip policies, 617 don't cover for financial failure, while 415 policies offer a maximum sum insured up to £4,000 or more, so this feature is becoming more commonplace.

"Make sure you check the T&Cs properly, that the policy is right for you, that holidays are ATOL protected and that you at least pay the deposit with a credit card if it is over £100 to benefit from the protection afforded by Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act.

Notes to editors:

GoCompare is a comparison website that enables people to compare the costs and features of a wide variety of insurance policies, financial products and energy tariffs.

GoCompare does not charge people to use its services, and it does not accept advertising or sponsored listings, so all product comparisons are unbiased. GoCompare makes its money through fees paid by the providers of products that appear on its various comparison services when a customer buys through the site.

GoCompare does not sell its customers’ data.

When it launched in 2006, it was the first comparison site to focus on displaying policy details rather than just listing prices, with the aim of helping people to make better-informed decisions when buying their insurance. GoCompare has remained dedicated to helping people choose the most appropriate products rather than just the cheapest, and has teamed up with Defaqto, the independent financial researcher, to integrate additional policy information into a number of its insurance comparison services. This allows people to compare up to an extra 30 features of cover.

GoCompare is the only comparison website to be invited to join the British Insurance Brokers’ Association (BIBA) and is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).
