GoCompare comments on SSE price rise

Georgie Frost, consumer advocate for GoCompare Energy comments on the news of SSE’s price rise.

"In case of saving the worst for last, SSE have joined the rest of the Big Six in clobbering customers by announcing a price hike before the government's price cap is due to come in later in the year.

“This latest hike will come into effect from July 11th and will see the average SSE dual fuel bill rise by 6.7%, that’s an extra £76 a year.

“In April, MP's criticised the British Gas price rise of £60 (5.5%), calling it ‘unjustified’. Now, just a few weeks later, SSE have announced an even bigger price rise, meaning its 2.36m dual fuel customers will have to fork out even more.

“But it's not just British Gas or SSE, all of the major energy suppliers have announced price rises in some form this spring, which will impact around 9 million people in the next few weeks.

Energy price rises are becoming something of an annual tradition , but the good news is that people are starting to take things into their own hands by shopping around and switching, but there’s still a way to go, and it’s important for people to stay vigilant against price rises.

So if you are suffering on a poor value tariff, take five minutes out to compare and switch - it could save you hundreds and it will send a clear message to energy firms that this is one tradition that needs to end"

About GoCompare

GoCompare is a comparison website that enables people to compare the costs and features of a wide variety of insurance policies, financial products and energy tariffs.

GoCompare does not charge people to use its services, and it does not accept advertising or sponsored listings, so all product comparisons are unbiased. GoCompare makes its money through fees paid by the providers of products that appear on its various comparison services when a customer buys through the site.

GoCompare does not sell its customers’ data.

When it launched in 2006, it was the first comparison site to focus on displaying policy details rather than just listing prices, with the aim of helping people to make better-informed decisions when buying their insurance. GoCompare has remained dedicated to helping people choose the most appropriate products rather than just the cheapest, and has teamed up with Defaqto, the independent financial researcher, to integrate additional policy information into a number of its insurance comparison services. This allows people to compare up to an extra 30 features of cover.

GoCompare is the only comparison website to be invited to join the British Insurance Brokers’ Association (BIBA) and is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).
